Escape from Earth

The Last World War spread from a simmering conflict in Africa to an all-out war in Asia in a matter of weeks, spreading to the rest of the world by the Ides of August.  As the sun rose on August 16, 2052 nuclear fires raged in Korea, China and Tibet.  By the next morning, half a billion people where dead across the northern hemisphere as nuclear firestorms erupted on four continents.  The Beanstalks fell and deep space seemed safer than the surface of Earth.
