Gate Ruin

Twenty million years ago, the Gatebuilders ruled the galaxy.  Now little remains except locked, rarely functional Gates, buried in the ruins of devastated worlds.  The Gates could lead to distant nexi scattered across the Milky Way and maybe beyond, but those who tried to traverse the Gate network rarely returned.  And the Gates had a habit of swallowing themselves up once awoken.
