In the Armpit

The Armpit Nebula, the tortured remains of the Betelgeuse supernova, was a rich source of stable transuranic metals and was resettled by the nascent Betelgeuse Union in the 50th Century. As development continued, the remains of the original rotating settlement became incorporated into a larger movable habitat and settlers added a starport equipped with artificial gravity and other redeveloped technologies. The completed structure was inaugurated as the Verne Drift in 5169CE. The settlement eventually became the home to nearly two million residents, survived Bengali attacks during two wars and served as the capital of the reformed Federation of Orion from 5366CE until the completion of the Great Nebular City in 5500CE.
