Overview

The Khabadera are oxygen breathing Secondary Race members of the Grand Federation of Races.  A Primary Race until their demotion after the First Federation War, the Khabadera are a bitter Race, suffering decline and hostile to other races, especially Humanity.

Physical Description

The Khabadera are large upright bipeds noted for their angular limbs and head.  An adult Khabadera of either sex is approximately 2.5 meters tall, light to medium brown in color, and masses 250-300kg.  The Khabaderan head is a convex, back-bent rectangle with two black eyes, central sensory cilia and a thin broad toothy mouth that serves digestive, respiratory, communications and sensory functions.  Two long angular three-segmented arms each end in seven manipulative tentacles.  Thick segmented legs end in large hoofed feet.  Khabaderans generally wear sleeveless tunic-like outfits of muted colors and little additional adornment.

Physiological and Social Development

Khabadera are territorial clan-based omnivores, evolving from plains herd animals tied to geography by watering holes and cultural sites, particularly burial grounds and spiritual groves.  Khabaderans have two sexes, with the female bearing live immature young after a short gestation.  Both parents and the clan as a whole cooperate in raising the young from helpless 5kg newborns to full size and sexual maturity at age 12-15.  Khabaderan sexes are physically and socially equivalent, with external differences only apparent by smell.

Khabaderan society is socially homogenous and conservative, emphasizing clan relations and territorial status.  Reverence for elders and ancestors is strong.  Traditional religion focused on contact with the spirits of pre-civilization ancestor heroes and territory founders, utilizing the herb chundas to achieve a trance-like state.  Chundas was known as Static to Humans, a corrosive psycho-active drug, and after repeated attempts to stop smuggling, all chundas was eradicated by a bioengineered plague unleashed by the Empire of Humanity in Operation Coherent Purge in 3471CE.  After failed attempts to reengineer chundas, modern Khabaderans began to rely on bio-feedback and nano-technological brain stimulation to mimic the effect of chundas.

The natural Khabaderan life span was approximately 60 years.  Technological advancements and regeneration therapies available to all modern Khabadera allow a full life span of 1,200 years, though average life expectancy is closer to 600 years

History

The Khabadera evolved on a planet very similar to Terra, though with slightly lower gravity and a more extreme climate stemming from a supercontinent geography.  After achieving a world-wide culture and learning through ritual to limit combat between numerous nation-states, the Khabadera developed spaceflight and were admitted into the Grand Federation in 9845BC under Eenikiti sponsorship.  Renowned as disciplined soldiers and skilled pioneers, the Khabadera spread though the Grand Federation and eventually fell under the patronship of the emerging Heshar, who elevated them first to Secondary race status in 4731BC, and then to Primary race status in 3460BC.  During the later Heshar Era, many Khabadera became frustrated by Heshar limits on their colonization of frontier regions, and they sided with their old Eenikiti patrons in the War of Liberation, fighting against the Heshar and their dwindling allies.

As a reward for service in the War of Liberation, the Khabadera settled a number of prime nitrogen-oxygen worlds along the Federation Rimward frontier, an area that would come into contact with Imperial Human Coreward expansion.  The Khabadera were wary of Human expansionism and though they held many of the Federation diplomatic posts within the Empire before the Heshar War, friction over Imperial expansion and Static smuggling led to sour relations, some say inflamed by the Heshar remanents.  After the losses of the bloody First Federation War and the extinction of chundas, the Grand Federation stripped the Khabadera of Primary race status, elevating the mechanoid Zhretra in their place.

Khabaderan society, especially on the frontier, came to see Humanity as a mortal enemy and encouraged B'dr'rak rebels and Kith'turi renegades, supplying them with funding, arms and technical assistance in low-level campaigns against Imperial interests.  With Eenikiti encouragement, Khabaderans fought brutally against Imperial Human forces and civilians in the three final Federation wars, and suffered greatly as a result.  Though no Hellking ever struck a Khabaderan settled world, the war ended with sixty Khabaderan systems inside the new Imperial border.  Unwilling to live under Human subjugation, between 3855 and 3870CE sixteen billion Khabaderans, almost a quarter of the racial population, left worlds that they had occupied for over 3,000 years and resettled within the Grand Federation in a mass migration known as The Great Retreat.  After the fall of the Empire and the ravages of the Mech Plague, Khabaderans reoccupied eight of their old worlds by force, displacing, enslaving or eliminating the Human populations.

Current Status

With a population of seventy-four billion, the Khabadera remain a Secondary Race, bitter at Humanity and on the decline.  The Khabadera are not friendly to Humanity.  With the influx of refugees from The Great Retreat, this bitterness soon expanded to include Federation Humans as well.  Likewise, the Khabadera are not friendly toward the Zhretra, who they blame for displacing them, nor the Un'aa'gram, whom they rightly feel have manipulated them for millennia.

Notes

Khabaderan society has been in cultural and spiritual decline since the extinction of chundas, and while individuals or clans might be very successful as soldiers or frontier workers, the race as a whole suffers from depression and stagnation.
